SOM to Redefine Geelong's Waterfront with Cunningham Pier Transformation

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a renowned international architecture studio, is embarking on a significant undertaking to reimagine the historic Cunningham Pier in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. This expansive 10,000-square-meter redevelopment project, secured through a competitive design process led by Gurner Group and Costa Property Group, will introduce an array of public amenities, luxurious residences, a substantial hotel, and a vibrant mix of shops and eateries, all strategically positioned over the waters of Corio Bay.

The transformation envisions a pedestrian-centric waterfront experience, where visitors will be greeted by an inviting public square adorned with elegant water features. Dominating the pier's furthest point will be a soaring 34-story building, set to become Geelong's tallest landmark, surpassing the existing Miramar apartment tower. This distinctive high-rise will feature a trefoil footprint, reminiscent of three interconnected cylindrical forms that gracefully narrow at both their base and apex. Complementing this central structure, a series of buildings will extend along the pier's length, characterized by their curvilinear profiles and cascading terraces, deliberately designed to evoke the fluid motion of water and the organic shapes found in marine environments. The development will offer approximately 280 residential units and 12 exclusive waterfront villas, each boasting its own private yacht berth. Additionally, floating platforms will host various activity zones and sports facilities, further enhancing the pier's recreational appeal.

SOM's vision extends beyond mere construction; it aims to establish Cunningham Pier as a vibrant hub for both local residents and tourists, blending urban life with the tranquility of the marine environment. The proposal includes an elevated public promenade, serving as the central artery that seamlessly connects the city to the bay's scenic vistas and diverse activities. This design approach meticulously preserves the original pier structure while creating a contemporary, pedestrian-friendly space above. Furthermore, the redevelopment is committed to ecological enhancement, incorporating new marine habitats to foster increased biodiversity within the pier's vicinity. This holistic strategy underscores SOM's dedication to creating spaces that enrich public life while simultaneously safeguarding and promoting marine ecosystems.
