SCAD showcases diverse alumni creations at Design Miami.Paris

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) recently captivated audiences at Design Miami.Paris with an impressive exhibition showcasing the diverse talents of its alumni. A standout piece was a vividly colored tufted floor installation by Los Angeles-based designer and SCAD graduate, Abel Macias. This installation dramatically reimagined a historic 18th-century staircase at L’hôtel de Maisons in Paris, drawing inspiration from the American Southwest’s landscape with its bright hues and distinctive patterns. Complementing Macias’s work, Gretchen Wagner, another SCAD graduate specializing in fibers, unveiled a stunning suspended sculpture. This intricate piece, crafted from accordion-folded paper cylinders and adorned with delicate embroidered beads, gracefully hung from the ceiling, resembling an ethereal chandelier.

Further enriching the exhibition were various other innovative creations from SCAD alumni. Evan Baker, a furniture design graduate, presented an elegant wood-grain credenza that highlighted craftsmanship and material beauty. Meanwhile, Anne Weber Callahan, also from furniture design, exhibited two ceramic stools designed to emulate the organic texture of clay. In the realm of textiles, Katie Hagen, a fibres graduate, displayed a natural-dyed silk organza weaving, showcasing her mastery of color and form. Adding an industrial design perspective, Marcelo Suro, who completed his industrial design studies at SCAD, unveiled six unique sculptural lamps. These pieces ingeniously combined hand-blown glass with volcanic stone, a testament to his creative residency at SCAD’s Alumni Atelier in Lacoste, France.

SCAD's strong presence at Design Miami.Paris underscores its commitment to fostering exceptional design talent and providing a platform for its graduates to shine on an international stage. The institution's ongoing partnership with Design Miami, exemplified by previous notable installations and future plans to exhibit at the flagship event in Miami Beach, reinforces its dedication to pushing the boundaries of art and design. Through these vibrant showcases, SCAD continues to inspire and contribute significantly to the global design community, highlighting innovation, creativity, and the enduring impact of its alumni.
