Milanese architect Isabella Franco, along with her husband Riccardo Proni, embarked on a decades-long journey to find their ideal seaside dwelling, eventually settling on the captivating volcanic island of Pantelleria, located between Sicily and North Africa. Their strong connection to the island's unique rhythm and isolation led them to acquire a historic 'dammuso,' a traditional stone dwelling known for its thick volcanic rock walls and distinctive domed roofs. These ancient structures are naturally insulated, keeping interiors cool in summer and warm in winter, a design feature that the couple found particularly appealing given the island's extreme temperatures. Moreover, the dammuso's innovative rainwater collection system, diverting precipitation into underground cisterns, deeply resonated with their commitment to sustainable living and resource conservation, influencing their daily habits even when away from the island.
Their search for a home was guided by a profound respect for traditional architecture, seeking a property that retained its authenticity, robust original features, and the potential for thoughtful upgrades rather than a complete overhaul. In May 2023, they discovered a peasant house from the early 1900s, comprising several connected dammusi, including a main residence and a smaller outbuilding. This property, previously owned by a local restaurateur, had preserved many of its original characteristics, such as vaulted ceilings, old cementina tiles, and stone arches. The presence of an existing pool, a rarity given Pantelleria's protected national park status, was a significant advantage. The six-month renovation focused on subtle enhancements like electrical updates, a redesigned kitchen, and new openings to invite more natural light, all while employing local artisans to ensure the work honored the building's historical integrity.
