The Genesis of Modular: A Holistic Design Vision
Formant Studio, a prominent design firm in Mexico City, undertook the challenge of converting a conventional office area into an advanced high-fidelity listening lounge named 'Modular.' This ambitious project transcended a mere renovation; it was an exercise in creating a holistic environment where every component was meticulously designed to contribute to a unified experience. The studio's vision for Modular involved seamlessly integrating cutting-edge audio technology with sophisticated interior design, focusing on user interaction and comfort. The core of this transformation was the development of bespoke elements, including a central, custom-made social sofa that encourages interaction, and an advanced sound system tailored to the unique acoustics of the space. This integration ensured that the lounge would serve as a sanctuary for auditory exploration and a vibrant hub for social engagement.
The design philosophy behind Modular was rooted in the principle that sound, architecture, and visual aesthetics are interdependent layers, each influencing the other to form a singular, immersive system. Formant Studio collaborated closely with the occupants, including graphic design studio Simple Moo and renowned architectural photographer Fabián Martínez, to infuse their insights into the design process. This collaboration allowed for the creation of an environment where bodily comfort, visual appeal, and sonic dimensions were meticulously integrated from the outset. Crafting an Immersive Experience: Details and Functionality
The interior design of Modular showcases a thoughtful combination of materials and bespoke elements that contribute to its distinctive atmosphere. While retaining much of the original white-painted walls, Formant Studio introduced a lush green carpet throughout the space, providing a vibrant contrast and enhancing acoustic properties. A focal point is the wall lined with rich birch burl veneer, which serves as an elegant backdrop for a custom black-stained-oak speaker system and a sleek, rounded stainless steel DJ booth. A charming detail for performers is an oval cutout in the veneer featuring a digitized display for showcasing their names, alongside embedded additional speakers. These elements underscore the lounge's commitment to both high-fidelity sound and sophisticated aesthetics, catering to both the performers and the audience.
Stainless steel accents are consistently integrated into Formant Studio's custom-designed furniture, appearing in the legs of an oak coffee table, oval side tables, and the bar and console that define a serving and workspace area. Central to the lounge is a bespoke social sofa, designed to sit low to the ground, with stainless-steel legs elegantly separating its oak base from the green carpet. This sofa features black upholstered and modular backrest elements, promoting a flexible and communal seating arrangement. Beyond the custom pieces, the lounge is curated with sourced furniture such as LC2 armchairs, Toio Lamps, a concrete coffee table by Creto, and decorative orbs by Ema Ceramics, which collectively unify the space's aesthetic. Additionally, Formant Studio crafted a series of aluminum frames on one wall to display Martínez's photography, further integrating art into the environment. Modular debuted during Mexico City art week, quickly becoming a recognized addition to the global trend of listening lounges.
