Finnish innovator Elementic has unveiled MO6, a pioneering wall-surfacing product derived from timber industry byproducts, largely consisting of pure carbon. This material, showcased as thick, light, and dark-hued tiles, offers a distinctive rough texture. Launched as the MO6 Eternal collection at the Habitare trade fair, it marks a significant step in material technology.
Revolutionizing Construction with Carbon-Negative Materials
Elementic's MO6 material represents a significant advancement in sustainable building, distinguished by its exceptionally high carbon content, which accounts for 90 percent of its composition. The company states that MO6 is the world's most carbon-negative construction material, capable of sequestering more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it releases during its entire lifecycle. This unique characteristic is a direct result of its innovative manufacturing process, which transforms lignin from forestry waste into durable, fire-resistant tiles. Lignin, a complex organic polymer often discarded or burned, is effectively repurposed, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials while addressing environmental concerns related to embodied carbon in construction.
MO6 tiles are produced using lignin, a substance typically considered a difficult-to-use byproduct of the forestry industry and often burned for energy. Through a highly proprietary process, Elementic purifies the lignin by removing impurities like oxygen in a bioreactor. This patented method transforms the lignin into a robust, fire-resistant material that is also remarkably lightweight, offering both durability and an appealing aesthetic. Johanna Normiala, general manager of MO6, highlighted the company's expertise in transforming carbon-rich lignin into a valuable and useful building material, likening the process to "baking a cake" to achieve a hard, resilient, and light product. MO6, positioned as a premium interior design solution, is already being integrated into various projects, including a luxury spa in Paris. While currently marketed for dry indoor spaces, its parent company, Elementic, holds ambitious plans for expanding its applications, including the development of bricks for broader construction use. The material's thermal and acoustic properties are comparable to wood, with ongoing research aiming to enhance these characteristics through manufacturing process adjustments.
